Surrounded by fjords and mountains, this former Hanseatic city boasts a unique charm, a rich cultural heritage, and a vibrant city life. Welcome to one of the world’s most beautiful coastal voyages! Our journey begins in Bergen, a charming coastal city surrounded by fjords and mountains. Founded in 1070, Bergen is one of Norway’s oldest cities and has preserved its rich history and unique atmosphere.
Before departure, you have time to explore this lively city, often referred to as the “Gateway to the Fjords.” In the morning, we take you on a journey through Bergen’s history, where old traditions meet modern city life. We start with a guided walk through the historic center, experiencing some of Bergen’s most iconic landmarks.
Our first stop is Bryggen, a UNESCO-listed Hanseatic wharf and one of Norway’s most famous cultural landmarks. The colorful wooden buildings along the harbor date back to the Middle Ages when Bergen was an important trading hub in the powerful Hanseatic League. Walking through narrow alleyways, we get a glimpse of how merchants lived and worked here for centuries. Today, Bryggen is filled with small galleries, craft shops, and cozy cafés, where history is woven into the walls.
Next, we visit Fisketorget, Bergen’s famous Fish Market. This lively market has been a meeting place for fishermen, farmers, and traders for over 700 years. Strolling between the stalls, you will see a wide selection of fresh seafood, local produce, and regional specialties. If you’d like, you can taste fresh shrimp, king crab, or a bowl of traditional fish soup—a true taste of coastal Norway.
Boarding the Hurtigruten takes place between 16:00 and 19:30, and your cabin will be ready no later than 18:00. Your Vitus tour guide will be available at the reception between 17:00 and 18:00, ready to assist you with any travel information.
As we set sail from Bergen, we enjoy a delicious dinner buffet featuring fresh, local ingredients. The ship follows the old Viking route northward through Hjeltefjorden, where you can sit back and enjoy the breathtaking scenery from the deck or panoramic lounge.
📍 Time in port: Bergen 14:30 – 21:30 (all year)
